"I am inspired by much that surrounds me including: nature, words, experiences, color, shape, and line as well as the marks, tactile use of materials, and the textures created by the variety of mediums, tools and surfaces both traditional and unique.  I enjoy the process of creating work that incorporates my varied art background and the opportunity to express that which inspires me through the calligraphic stroke, gesture, legible or partially or fully obstructed, the drawn or painted image, or the melding of mediums.  It is how I process and create, often my voice is entwined and hidden in my work."

A multifarious artist, Sharon D. Eisman's  journey through the arts has taken her from early years at RISD, painting with Providence artist Eugene Tonoff, and later on to Butera School of Art, Boston, Rhode Island College, and several local, national and internationally recognized artists and teachers of lettering and handwriting. From paint, graphite, charcoal, ink and to pens, quills, brushes, yarns, fabrics, metals, she continues to explore the variety of mediums, tools, styles, their possibilities and unique experiences each provides.

Her passion for lettering began in the early 70‘s and while she will always work in a variety of mediums, lettering often rises to the surface either in its' traditional, contemporary, or abstracted form, also finding its way under, over, and even obscured from the viewer.  Since 1980 through her business, Starr Designs, she has lettered gas trucks and cement walls, created murals and painted faux finishes in private homes and businesses. Sharon has created one of a kind calligraphic pieces and, hand-lettered invitation designs, corporate documents of recognition and more.

Sharon has taught calligraphy over the years at several local venues and organizations including The International Association of Master Penman, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting.  IAMPETH, is dedicated to the practicing and preserving the art of calligraphy, engrossing and fine penmanship and is the oldest and largest of its kind in the US.  Sharon also served as president in 2004, bringing their annual week-long convention to Rhode Island for the first time.

Sharon is also a member of Masscribes, a New England based Calligraphy Organization.  She is an Artist Member of the Wickford Art Association, East Greenwich Art Club, Rhode Island Watercolor Society, and Warwick Museum of Art. She is also a Member of Art League Rhode Island, the International Association of Experimental Artists (ISEA), and West Bay Open Studios.

Her work has been published and she has exhibited in RI, MA, NY and Salzburg, Austria. In 2012, a calligraphic commission was presented to the Carnegie Foundation/Peace Palace at the Hague, Netherlands.
